We told you about Akaneiro: Demon Hunters, the new hack-n-loot game from American McGee’s Spicy Horse Studios that got greenlit on Steam just a while back. The game has now hit its Kickstarter goal of 200,000, so the team has posted some news about its plans for the game in the coming months.

Spicy Horse Games (Alice: Madness Returns, American McGee’s Grimm) announced the total funds pledged will help them speed up development time and put more resources toward features like co-op gameplay, crafting within the game, iOS tablet support, and more. The action RPG, which plays a bit like Diablo, will now be coming not just to Mac, but to the iPad as well.

“We spent most of the weekend on the Akaneiro launch and helping push the Kickstarter over the finish line, so we haven’t had a chance to work out an exact roadmap yet, that’s something we’ll be looking at in the next few weeks” said American McGee, CEO of Spicy Horse Games.

The Kickstarter campaign showed that pledging players wanted the co-op and crafting support first, with tablet and Linux support as soon as possible. The project did not reach its stretch goal, however, so will not initially focus on Ouya, the Android-powered tiny box console.

McGee added, “Over the coming weeks, we’ll be taking a look at what it takes to implement these features and get them out in a timely manner. We’ve also still got contributions coming in on the Paypal page, which may influence which features wind up where on the plan.”

Akaneiro: Demon Hunters combines the Little Red Riding Hood story with Japanese folklore and myth, and is illustrated with the distinctively dark American McGee stye. You can play the game now in your web browser to get a feel for how much fun it is.

Weird.

The highly anticipated Evasion jailbreak was released earlier today for all iOS 6 devices, including the iPhone 5. The release saw incredible success with over 100,000 downloads in the first 10 minutes of availability. As we said in our official guide to jailbreaking with Evasi0n, this really is one of the smoothest jailbreaks of all time.

But every jailbreak has its initial quirks, and the main issue with Evasi0n is how it affects Apple’s stock Weather app in iOS 6. On the iPhone, the app instantly crashes. However, the iPad is a different story. Apparently Apple has been hiding a Weather app in the iPad this whole time, and Evasi0n reveals it.

The iPhone problem is obviously a concern among many users who rely on the Weather app to.. well.. check the weather. I tried opening it on my newly-jailbroken iPhone 5, and it immediately crashed. Welp.

Evad3r hacker extraordinaire pod2g tweeted that his team is aware of the Weather app issue, and a patch will soon be available for everyone to install in Cydia.

After jailbreaking an iPad with Evasi0n, you may notice an additional icon next to Cydia on your Home screen. It’s an old Weather app Apple normally has hidden within a plist entry in iOS, according to MuscleNerd, another Evad3rs team member. For some reason, the iOS 6 jailbreak unhides it.

Unfortunately, this Weather app isn’t iPad-optimized. It’s an old, pixelated, iPhone-sized version that looks far from crisp on the iPad’s Retina display. What’s interesting is that Apple had it hidden there in the first place. Why don’t we have an iPad version of the Weather app?

Regardless of the reason for it being there, an inbound Cydia update should also get rid of the mysterious Weather app on jailbroken iPads.

Popular Twitter app Tweetbot received an update today, adding inline image support for photos and videos shared from Flickr and Vine.

Tweetbot supports inline images from several different apps and services, including Instagram, which was disabled in the official Twitter app late last year following a dispute between Twitter and Instagram.

Videos shared from Vine and images shared from Flickr will now be shown directly within Tweetbot, without the need to open a separate window. Tweetbot includes native Vine controls that allow users to play videos via AirPlay and tweet links to videos.

Tweetbot's new version 2.7 update also includes the ability to open links in 1Password or Chrome, rather than Safari, and adds better support for muting Tweets that include URLs.

Both Tweetbot for iPhone [Direct Link] and Tweetbot for iPad [Direct Link] have been updated and can be downloaded from the App Store.

AppleInsider reported late last week that web traffic logs from machines claiming to run OS X 10.9 had jumped from "a few dozen" back in October into the thousands last month, suggesting that the new operating system may be close to making its first appearance. MacRumors is seeing a nearly identical trend, with a significant increase in OS X 10.9 activity since last November.

Apple needs to test new platforms with a wide range of websites, and server logs can be examined to see which operating systems and browsers are in use, tipping off sites when a new OS appears. While such data can be easily faked in browsers, the trends currently being observed are consistent with past releases and previous examinations have shown OS X 10.9 hits coming from IP addresses associated with Apple.

Apple has recently been launching new versions of OS X on an annual basis, with OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion having launched in July of last year, a year after 10.7 Lion in July 2011. Apple released the first developer preview of OS X Mountain Lion in mid-February of last year, so it seems reasonable that the company could be looking at similar timing for OS X 10.9.

It has been rumored that OS X 10.9 will bring Siri to Macs for the first time, building on the dictation feature added to Mountain Lion. Rumors have also suggested integration with Apple's Maps, although the company has experienced significant criticisms with its maps app on iOS.

"Evad3rs", a new team including some of the top iOS jailbreak authors, has just released Evasi0n, a brand-new jailbreak for iOS 6.x. The release marks the first time users have been able to deploy an untethered jailbreak on the iPhone 5.


Evasi0n is available for OS X, Windows, and Linux and provides a quick method for users to jailbreak their devices to make use of unauthorized like themes, tweaks, and apps from sources other than the App Store.

As an untethered jailbreak, users only need to apply the Evasi0n jailbreak once, making for a seamless user experience. Tethered jailbreaks requires users to have their devices connected to a computer each time they restart.

One of the fastest-spreading stories of the weekend has been a strange OS X Mountain Lion bug that can crash almost any Mac app running any version of OS X 10.8, reported on Open Radar.

The initial bug report stated that typing 'File:///' (without the quotes) into almost any app causes the app to crash.


Follow-up testing has shown that the final character needn't be a forward-slash, with almost any character after 'File://' triggering the bug. The issue is also speed-dependent: leaving a brief pause between typing // and the next character will prevent the crash from occurring.

More embarrassingly still for Apple, filing a crash report causes both Crash Reporter and the Console apps to crash. The Console crash can only be cured by running a terminal command:

sudo sed -i -e 's@File:///@F i l e : / / /@g' /var/log/system.log

The Next Web has a detailed analysis of the issue, noting that it is related to Apple's Data Detectors feature for automatically recognizing dates, locations and other information in text for addition to Address Book or Calendar entries.

While it is rather surprising that the issue took so long to receive publicity, Apple is now likely to include a fix for the problem sooner rather than later. It is, however, unknown whether Apple will squeeze a fix into the upcoming OS X 10.8.3 that has been in developer testing for over two months.

Several clues surfacing in recent days have hinted that Apple's iWork and iLife suites may be undergoing substantial redevelopment.


Late last week, Apple Bitch noticed two new job listings for senior software engineers for the company's iLife team, with the descriptions emphasizing a desire to "re-imagine how user interfaces should be built and work". MacNN followed up with its own reporting pointing to a number of other job postings for both the iLife and iWork teams suggesting that Apple is making significant additions to its teams.

Apple has recently added several job postings that explicitly reference the iLife team or the suite itself, including requests for an engineer in the iLife Frameworks QA department; a QA engineer to help test new features in iPhoto (that requires a "passion" for digital photography); a Senior User Interface Designer for iWork, and two Senior Software Engineer positions that explicitly reference working on the user interface of iLife.

Apple's iWork productivity suite, which includes Pages, Numbers and Keynote, last received minor updates in December, while the last major update came over four years ago. iLife represents Apple's consumer apps (iPhoto, GarageBand and iMovie) and saw its last major update in October 2010.


Apple has also been active in the area of document management and the cloud, acquiring 18 patents addressing information management from Maya-Systems.

New senior hires and patent acquisition may point to a major redevelopment of the software, but as new hires are typically done early in the development cycle, it may be some time before the fruits of such work are released to the public.

It is also likely that the new versions of iLife and iWork would lose the skeuomorphisms - emulation of real-life objects and materials like desk calendars, leather and wood. There have long been tensions within Apple over this approach, but with skeuomorphism proponent Scott Forstall being forced out of Apple and Jonathan Ive having now assumed responsibility for Human Interface aspects of software as well as hardware design, a new design direction for Apple's software may be in progress.

The mic can record straight into apps like GarageBand, or you can use Rode’s own Rec app, which will also let you share straight to SoundCloud or Dropbox.
